Emigrating (or repatriating in my case) is a funny business. People get all confused. Like my bank. Who debited the money I sent to Holland twice, resulting in my first 5-figure overdraft. And then took 48 hours to fix it, resulting in no money. Fortunately I didn't use the bankcard. By the time I hit the pub with my soon-to-be-ex workcollegues, financial normality was restored. Not that it mattered much as the pints came on coming. Not for me though, I'm a whimp. "Driving" was my excuse. But it was an excellent send-off and last day in England after 8 years.
And then came the last trip on the Dart 3 to Vlissingen. But not before I hoisted the Dutch flag on the flagpole at the office causing the flag to come loose at the bottom and subsequently destroying the hoisting mechanism. So that flag is well and truly stuck up there. Whoops. Apologies to the collegue who has to sort this out.
So from now on the stories and pictures on here will come from Holland. Where they have bikes. And drive on the right. And have orangy-things in all the shops now. And where they have Gordon & Joling. And more TV-progams about gardens and houses than the rest of the world combined. You will be duly informed about all the bureaucratic nonsense I have to go through, they are good at that here. Part 1 will be: importing your UK-car. Could be fun this thing, seeing Holland as a tourist ...

De meeste dozen staan ingepakt en de verhuiswagen inclusief vader gaat vanavond vanaf Vlissingen richting Dartford. Gisteren werd ik tot m'n verassing nog getrakteerd op een dineetje door m'n huidige nieuwe manager als bedankje voor bewezen diensten en dat stelde ik toch wel op prijs. Toch een leuke afsluiting zo, ook al hoort 'ie bij "de vijand". Verder vandaag al m'n geld overgemaakt dus ik denk vanaf vandaag in Euri. Kreeg toch nog zomaar £18 aan rente terug in cash van de bank. Wow, wat zal ik er eens allemaal voor gaan doen?
Verder loop ik, met een beetje mazzel, zomaar kans dat ik binnen afzienbare tijd een appartement-eigenaar word, want in NL zijn de regels mbt hypotheken blijkbaar zo zwaar niet. We shall see. Morgen de laatste werkdag en dan is het bye bye Dart. It's been emotional.

Tja, het is helaas weer verhuizen geblazen. Had ik net m'n flat ge-IKEA'd, moet ik weer vertrekken. De meubels heb ik verkocht aan de huisbaas en gisteren verdween ook mijn geliefde 32" LCD teevee. Want die is niet bruikbaar in NL doordat men daar een ander uitzend-systeem heeft. Om mijn pijn te illustreren, hier een foto voor en hier een foto na het verdwijnen van m'n Samsungetje. Hij heeft nu een nieuw baasje in Noord-London. Was een beetje fanatiek dit weekend en heb alles al bijna ingepakt. En 't busje komt pas donderdag. More on this story later.

Zap tot mijn schok naar BBC1 alwaar ik aantref het Eurovisie Songfestival met een Duitser op een paard met cowboyhoed die Turkije 12 punten geeft ... en een stel Lord Of The Rings softrockers staan nu voor blijkbaar. Op momenten zoals dit zal ik het missen in de UK te wonen en terug te moeten naar het Continent that taste forgot ... die Europeanen zijn toch ook echt van de pot gerukt. Antoine, where are you??

Darn, that's a very devious con I've fallen for. One could think a member of the Jewish community supports a free Palestine. But they don't really. They support the destruction of Israel (and therefore use the Palestinians to further their aim). Why these people protest is a mystery to me because it is of no use to uninformed onlookers like me who then find out the truth. Free Palestine: sure. AND destroy Israel. Weer een typisch staaltje van onvolledige berichtgeving. Den Volkschkrant bericht vandaag dat inwoners van Central London het meest verdienen in de EU. Wat ze er niet bij zetten is hoeveel deze personen zoal kwijt zijn aan woon- en andere lasten. En dat ook die het hoogst zijn van de EU. Zo betaalt ondergetekende, die nog niet eens in Central London woont, maandelijks 900 Euri aan huur en 150 Euri aan Council Tax. En dan nog niet te spreken over andere lasten. Daar zou ik in Nederland toch best een leuk huisje voor hebben.
Alhier een kleine drie-kamer flat in Dartford. Niet bepaald Location, Location, Location. In Nederland zou ik met zelfs de helft van m'n huidige inkomen waarschijnlijk hetzelfde overhouden. En dat ondanks de duurdere Euriolio. Nu klaag ik niet want ons eet geen droog brood, maar men had dat berichtje wel even wat kunnen aanvullen; London is schreeuwensduur.

De terugkeer naar Hollandia doet oude tradities weer herleven. Zo ben ik al zeker 10 jaar niet meer op Parkpop geweest. Hoogste tijd derhalve voor een bezoekje op 25 juni. Zeker omdat ik als Achterhoeker uiteraard toch eens één keer in m'n leven Normaal moet zien ... (alhoewel het dan wel vreemd is dat ik daar het halve land voor moet afreizen).

13:55 To My Frequent Visitors
Just to say; thanks! Blogging is so much more fun with an audience. This blog will soon 'relocate' to the Netherlands as my time in England is almost up. The faint expat-theme this blog had will therefore change into a faint repat-theme. I will look forward to living in my own country again after eight years and seeing Holland through the eyes of a stranger. Because it's full of Dutch people and lots has changed. Full reports will therefore follow soon about the strange Dutch world .... two weeks in England to go.

Het begint nu langzaam ernstig door te dringen dat het over ruim twee weken weer definitief richting Nederland gaat. Het duidelijkste komt dit momenteel tot uiting in het feit dat het vinden van enige woonruimte wel weer even een probleem zal zijn. In Engeland ga je gewoon even naar findaproperty en voila. In Nederland kom ik weer in de wondere wereld van woningbouwcorporaties en lotingen. En da's allemaal een beetje nieuw want in Nederland woonde ik altijd alleen maar in mijn studentenhuis. More on this no doubt continuing story later ....
Maar als iemand in de tussentijd iets leuks weet in Arnhem/Nijmegen mag je gerust even meelen.

The last time I saw something similar was during the Formula 1 event in 2004. And ofcourse we also have the Bafta's in full swing, so even more people. The place was totally packed today ...

It's not every day you see a forty foot elephant walking down the street. And if you're not careful, you'll get wet as well. The Sultan himself and his entourage were welcomed by the deputy mayor of London on Trafalgar Square. Truly impressive. Nice large picture here. More tomorrow.

Sta nog steeds niet echt te springen om terug te keren naar Nederland maar er zijn toch enkele verzachtende omstandigheden. Zo heb zojuist mijn nieuwe Nederlandse arbeidscontract ontvangen en er staan toch een aantal zaken in die ik in Engeland nog nooit ben tegengekomen. Zoals reiskosten woon-werk, vakantiegeld, kerstbonus, collectieve verzekeringen, meer vakantiedagen, ATV, spaarloon en nog zo van die goodies. In Engeland kreeg ik gewoon loon and that's it ... daarnaast is men zowaar geinteresseerd in mijn diploma's, ook wel eens leuk.

Because England has Boris Johnson MP. Yesterday, we watched a charity football match on Channel 5 between England and Germany. Old footballers, hangers-on and celebs were playing. As was Boris Johnson. And I can assure you, the head-on tackle he made on Gaudino will for ever be a football classic!! A true ROTFL moment. Damn, I will even vote Conservative! Go Boris!

Calling all Discworld fans.
This is purely out of interest , but its something I'm intrigued to know. In the UK Discworld books, the librarian of Unseen University (an orangutan) says only one word - "ook".
Obviously, in the Dutch version he wouldn't say that as it means "also", so I'd like to know what he says in the Dutch books.
Would be grateful for anyone who can provide an answer.

Well I suppose I shouldn't complain or even be surprised. In my good old Army days I was stationed in a place in Germany called Langemannshof. It's been derilict/used as a kind of businesspark for quite a while now and I always wanted to go back just to have a look. And I've just discovered that they've put the place to good use keeping in mind the tolerant and free-for-all attitude the Dutch Army was famous for. Because they've turned the place into a Swingers-Club. So perhaps nothing has changed afterall?
