It's just not fair if you look at it. Beginning Beatles fans have it so easy with YouTube and what not. 
In my days, one was lucky to record a short Beatles filmclip from TV on the newly invented "video-recorder", if you were fast enough pushing that 'record' button that is. Then anxiously waiting and hoping the broadcast via the rusty old roof-antenna wasn't interrupted by 'athmospherics' or a familymember with a sense of humour. More than often, you only had half the clip anyway. Whole evenings I've spent in the unheated garden-shed, because the old crappy radio in there was the only one to receive BBC World Service.
They were broadcasting "The Beatles at the Beeb" you see. A fortune in tapes it cost me, but I'm still one of the fastest stop-tape-swap-tape-record-tape operators around. Pictures? I only dreamt of having any Beatles pictures. Had to cut them out from any old magazine or paper I could find them in. Most had text plastered all over them. Pictures, pff.
But if you try and tell them young people of today that, they won't believe ya ...

Mijn onder-buurtjes komen uit Kosovo. Aardig gezin, ze hebben net een tweeling gekregen en goeie buren. Het Nederlands zijn ze net een beetje machtig hetgeen nog wel eens voor problemen zorgt, vooral als ze de keuken laat doen en de bouwers laten de boel half-afgewerkt achter. Schandalig gewoon maarja. De afgelopen week heb ik de buurtjes geholpen met hun pas aangeschafte computer ... van de kringloop gekocht voor 35 Euri. Tot mijn eigen verbazing heb ik het ding nog aan de praat gekregen ook.
Vanavond was bijzonder leuk. Buurman stond weer aan de deur. De door mij geadviseerde netwerkkaart was geinstalleerd door de winkel, men kon internetten. De buren weten overigens helaas niets van computers. Ik bedoel, helemaal niks. Nada, noppes, rien, zip, zilsch. Dat vergde enig handen en voeten uitlegwerk. Maar ik kreeg zowaar op dat ouwe PIII-kreng MSN Messenger aan de praat + de webcam.
Mind you, met een VGA-'grafische' kaart was het beeld niet geweldig. Desondanks was het hartverwarmend om de blijdschap te zien van de buurvrouw op het moment dat ze op dat wazige VGA-mono beeld toch haar moeder zag.

I read the oddest thing on Bear's blog about the words 'Dutch' and 'Service' in one sentence. Odd, because in Holland, 'a customer' is generally considered to be a nuisance to staff and shop. Life will be made difficult for you, the unsuspecting customer. For instance, in my local supermarket, I now can't get one of those little baskets anymore. No. I now have to stand in line for one and pay 50 cents, then do the shopping, then have to keep up with the cashier as I get bad looks when I do not pack MY OWN groceries quick enough,
then stand in line again to return the basket. The last time I tried it took a bit longer to return the basket as the little woman behind the counter was too busy doing her cross-word puzzle. I do apologise.
People like me should have a statue in Holland: to the unknown customer.
20:42 The Celebrated Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County
And there it was, in big typo on the front-page of the New York Times today: Angel's Camp, USA. A place I visited by pure accident in 2005. Why do I remember it? Because the pavement was littered by images of ... frogs. And it advertised itself as 'Home Of The Jumping Frog'. And I had absolutely no idea what that was all about. Apparently, this frog-jumping-event is classed 'ancient' in the US, as it has been going on for more than 2 years (80 to be precise). But there seems to be 'trouble at mill' though in peaceful Angel's Camp ....
"Bizarre" the New York Times describes the frog-fascination, and bizarre I found it too a bit. But then again every small town has to come up with something to draw in visitors. It's no different over here. Somthing with clogs and windmills and tulips and stuff. I guess I should have visited in May instead of October to see it for myself, opportunity missed;
In competition, frogs are allowed to jump three times and land — all while their jockeys yell, stomp the ground, and, yes, occasionally blow on the frogs’ nether regions. Measurements are down to the quarter-inch, which can often separate champions from mere fly-eaters. The animals are then caught with nets, thanked for their services (sometimes with a kiss), and returned to “frog condos,” basically large metal canisters with a few inches of water. The ultimate prize: the world record, held for the last two decades by the famed Rosie the Ribiter, who in 1986 made a staggering triple jump of 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches.
Frog Condos. Another thing I learned today. Only in the US of A! And I also learned that the California red-legged frog is out of bounds. Because they're great for ... wait for it ... sushi! And therefore all eaten by gold-diggers who lived in the town during the 1860's. But now, as mentioned, there's trouble in Camp. Two separate events are now scheduled, because two sets of organisers cannot jump 'through one door' in the 2,800 people town. A right old mini-war has broken out there, the details of which you should read for yourself as it's too trivial to repeat. But apparantly, according to one of the organisers "we’ve got teenagers coming in, wanting to join".
So if you want to visit a Gold Rush town in California and you want to see the traditional golddiggers-streetfight, Angel's Camp would be my best bet this year.

Eigenlijk gaat het best wel goed met mijn London-afkickverschijnselen, maar zo'n dag als vandaag doet toch auw.
PS. Dat moeten trouwens best wel vette Hamburgers zijn daar in Wembley gezien de prijs van £ 5.- !

Awel, ik heb maar eens besloten wat actiever te worden en heb mij zomaar vrijwillig gemeld als bestuurslid van onze VvE. VvE? Arme sloebers zoals ik, die alleen een flatje kunnen kopen, krijgen veelal te maken met een Vereniging van Eigenaren. Normaal ben ik iemand voor wie geldt; 'iedere club die mij wil kan geen goede club zijn', maar hiervan ben ik 'van rechtswege' lid dus hoera! Omdat de admin tot dusver door een professioneel bedrijf werd gerund was de animo voor de VvE in ons gebouw vrij klein, maar daar komt verandering in.
Gisteravond was er vergadering en een leuke gelegenheid je buren eens te zien (...). Dat leuke meisje van hiernaast, een opsporingsambtenaar met sportschooljaarkaart en een elektriciën amongst others. En omdat ik de kascontrole maar meteen mag doen levert ook dat leuke weetjes op. Die zijn uiteraard vertrouwelijk alhoewel ik vast wel de reden voor de laatste rioolverstopping mag verklappen, zijnde een 'ophoping van tampons' ....
Omdat we ons blauw betalen aan service kosten maar daar nix voor zien gaan we nu met een clubje wat actiever deze VvE besturen. Want de huidige admin-company vindt het allemaal wel goed. Zijn vrij lax en duur. Ik heb er in ieder geval wel zin in, so stay tuned.

Tis grappig, en Angleterre wisten geregeld grote getale Nederlanders mij letterlijk te vinden voor een leuke holiday met logies en/of ontbijt en nu ik weer teruggekakt ben naar Nederland komen aldaar de Engelsen voor een geheel verzorg arrangement met continental breakfast en vruchtenthee. De maanden Juli en Augustus zijn al volgeboekt. Nu alleen nog even uitleggen dat Amsterdam 130 km die andere kant op ligt. Dat had ik nog even niet vermeld in de folder uit PR-overwegingen.

Look. I'm a big Beatles-anorack-fan but this is getting silly now. That the Beatles are getting on iTunes (eventually) is great although I do not own such a pod-contraption, but please please me, not another 'Free As A Bird' or 'Real Love' simply to market a new Beatles-thing. There was a very valid reason these tracks were previously never released!
McCartney: I'm sorry about your failed marriage but do we now have to collectively suffer for this!? I'd rather hear a mine explode.
