I also found out by accident that on October 3rd, there seems to be something like 'Tag der deutschen Einheit', a pretty horrible prospect for me as a Dutchman, but I'm sure I'll survive the 'Festmeile vom Brandenburger Tor' somehow ...

Vanaf vandaag heb ik met onmiddellijke ingang en wel nu zomaar twee-en-een-halve-week vakantie. Zomaar. Tot 12 oktober ben ik qua werk geschlossen. Toen ik nog in de UK was moest ik elke vakantiedag drie keer omdraaien maar hier, mede doordat familie-bezoeken geen vakantie-dagen meer vergen, heb ik meer dan dagen genoeg. Eigenlijk schaam ik me een beetje dat ik 'zomaar' twee weken vrij neem.
Het is alweer een vrij lange tijd geleden dat ik meer dan 1 week vakantie achter elkaar had. Bijna twee jaar geloof ik. Ik moet dus weer even wennen aan al die vrijheid. En behalve een midweek Berlijn volgende week heb ik ook geen grootse plannen. Ik sta dus open voor tips. Het zal wel vrij veel met de fotocamera rondgaan worden denk ik zo ... dwz. voor zover ik voor de middag het bed uitrol.

During my five years in Scotland, there was hardly a bigger Scottish hero alive than rally driver Colin McRae. Today I read he was killed in a helicopter crash yesterday (although identity still to be confirmed), along with his son. I went to one of his "Colin McRae Forest Stages Rallies" once (see picture below) in Scotland and thought it was a pretty awesome experience. There will be a lot of sadness today in Scotland.

Hoe gaat het met mijn UK-afkickverschijnselen? Een stukje beter alweer. Zo heb ik zowaar een uitnodiging om begin oktober naar London te gaan afgeslagen omdat ik in die dagen ook naar Berlijn kan. En in Berlijn, daar was ik alweer een tijd niet. Toch zo'n dikke 17 jaar alweer niet. En het schijnt dat men daar sinds mijn laatste bezoek aardig is losgegaan qua stedebouw. Ik ben derhalve erg benieuwd hoe het er tegenswoordigs bijligt. Of ik nog veel ga herkennen is bijzonder twijfelachtig ...
Geloof overigens niet die mensen die je stukjes Muur verkopen of hebben verkocht. Die Muur was zo bikkelhard dat er alleen maar miniskule kleine stukjes gruizel vanaf kwamen. Als je een stukje Muur in een glazen hokje in je kast hebt staan is de kans vrij groot dat je bent belazerd.

Went to see the game Holland vs. Bulgaria in Amsterdam. Qualifier for the European Championships. Even though I was told that I should leave my camera behind (security considered my Canon EOS 350d to be a 'professional camera') I managed to sneak it in and make some piccies, like the one above; 1-0 for Holland. That was also just about all that happened in this dreary game, apart from the 2-0 ... yawn.

Darn bugger shit blast! Holy handgrenades of Antioch! They are holding a Monty Python day at my castle. Aaaaargh, I fart in their general direction, those sons of silly persons! And I used to live about an hours drive away from it! But going there now would be silly. Best thing would be to tell those mainly American visitors that Doune Castle is actually "just a model" and that there is "no Monty Python day here".

En zo was ik daar eens een beetje aan het rommelen in een ouwe doos omdat ik naar een of ander kabeltje op zoek was, kom ik plots een oude agenda tegen. Met daarin nog een oud verfrommeld post-it blaadje geschreven door Britt, Hoofd PZ, en mijn eerste baas. 'Eerste baas' in de zin van een echt full-time contract bij een echt bedrijf, Zilveren Kruis, afdeling PZ in dit geval. Zes hele weken was ze m'n baas, want toen verkaste ik in het kader van een vaag projectje naar een ander kantoor. Maar in die zes weken heeft ze het toch gepresteerd het predikaat 'beste baas ooit' te krijgen. Mijn oude baas bij Dart Line kwam in de buurt maar haalt het toch net niet. Want behalve dat Britt ex-stewardes was, ergo gewoon mooi, had ze ook nog iets dat voor mij helemaal onweerstaanbaar was; een bijna identiek gevoel voor humor. En een vrouw met humor, dat was even nieuw voor me. Niet slaan! Ik zeg; voor mij.
Zo ging ze helemaal mee in mijn bijzondere voorliefde voor zeer lange, in formele stijl geschreven, onzin-briefjes. Menig onzin-briefje werd uitgewisseld. Zo werd het vragen om een pakje nietjes bijvoorbeeld een vrij lange aangelegenheid. Het voorbeeld hiernaast kreeg ik eens toen ik om een of andere duistere reden niet kon lunchen met m'n oude collega's van Polisbeheer en ik mijn baas Britt "a la op school" om een excuusbriefje vroeg. Het resultaat was het waard om bewaard te worden. Zoals dat gaat krijg je op een gegeven moment een andere baan (in een ander land in mijn geval) en dan verwateren contacten met oud-collega's uiteraard snel - niks aan te doen, ook niet erg. Toch lijkt het me wel eens leuk deze dame nog eens bij toeval tegen te komen. Dat wordt dan in ieder geval een leuke middag mits voorzien van voldoende pakjes post-it.

As a natural born cynic, I'm not for soppy stories and charity fundraising gimmicks. But I have to admit that someone like Jane Tomlinson, who died yesterday, was one of the few that formed an exception to my cynisism. Here I am with my lazy lifestyle, worrying about futile little things, not really going anywhere, whilst this woman has all to live for and more. Runs marathons despite her cancer, lives life to the full. And was told it would only last 6 more months. But despite this fights against the inevitable, shows spirit and grit and hangs on for 7 more years. I was truly saddened to read the news she passed away, seeing her always somehow made me feel ashamed of myself ...

One American magazine last week stopped only just short of attributing all the good in the world in recent years to the example of the late Princess. It is sometimes difficult to understand what planet these people are on. She is just another dead glamorous celebrity.
