Helahola, het gaat wel rap nu met de teloorgang van mijn persoonlijk blogosphere. Jackles ook op standby. Zoals deze site bewijst ben je op een gegeven moment wel eens gewoon door al je 'leuke' anecdotes heen. Of je leidt toch net niet dat spannende leven en omdat je niet anoniem bent kun je ook niet liegen. Ik ben van de bloglichting 2003 en van dat kringetje van 't eerste uur zijn eigenlijk alleen nog over; Mark en pas ook weer sind kort van de standby; Tante Neel. De rest is allemaal stilletjes 'opgelost' of aan het hybernaten of Hyven. Tis wel een beetje Remy aan het worden hier. En ik, ik ploetert maar gewoon door, zoekende naar dat ene Eureka-moment.

The picture on the 'right' is mine, taken last year and the picture on the 'left' is not mine and taken this year. I suppose I should see it as a compliment that someone is actually copying me ... (unimaginative bastard)
As to the band; the singer changed bands and I followed the singer. Sorry, no fistfights, all went nicely. New band sounds great as it should do being made up out of semi-professionals. More on this story much later.

En oh ja, Jan Wolkers is overleden. De man die er voor verantwoordelijk is dat ik nog nooit een roman (uit)gelezen heb. De beroemde boekenlijst op de middelbare school ging ook aan mij niet voorbij en zo moest ik er zomaar ineens zes van die roman-dingen lezen. Aangezien ik niet uit een familie van intellectuele boekenwurmen kom had ik werkelijk geen idee wie, wat, waar ik moest lezen. Via de film-wereld had ik wel eens van ene Jan Wolkers gehoord. Dus ik als 14-jarige naar de bieb, rekje Romans, sectie Jan Wolkers. Shit, hij had er toch alwel aardig wat geschreven. Nou ja, dan de darts-methode maar; ogen dicht en kiezen maar.
De keuze viel op 'Een Roos van Vlees'. Weut ik veul, zal wel. Veel weet ik er niet meer van, want op pagina 3 of 4 ofzo werd er al een zwangere vrouw van achteren genomen geloof ik, hetgeen erin resulteerde dat ik het boek vol walging in de hoek van mijn kamer gooide. Daar was ik toch nog even niet aantoe dank u vriendelijk. En toen ik twintig jaar later eens bij toeval aan dit verhaal dacht, daagde het me ook pas wat de titel van het boek eigenlijk betekende ...
Heb nooit meer zo'n roman-dinges aangeraakt. Met uittreksels (en een Nederlands-leraar die toevallig een kennis van m'n ouders was) toch een zesje kunnen halen voor Nederlands. Het interesseerde me werkelijk geen bal wat het 'thema' van een roman was, alle schrijvers waren voor mij absofort enge viezerikken die ik weigerde te lezen. Tussen mij en de schrijvers-wereld is het helaas ook nooit meer goedgekomen na dit jeugd-trauma. Misschien moet ik er maar eens een boek over schrijven; jeugd-trauma's schijnen daarvoor namelijk een vereiste te zijn ...

It's clear now - we are at the dawn of the Second Middle Ages. Yesterday, 130 Muslim scholars wrote to the Pope urging for greater understanding between Muslims and Christians. The Pope has made very clear what he thinks of that! Because 700 years after the infamous Knight Templars were dissolved for heresy, the Vatican will publish an old document stating that the Knight Templars were no heretics after all. How very convenient; "A new book, Processus contra Templarios, will be published by the Vatican's Secret Archive on Oct 25, and promises to restore the reputation of the Templars, whose leaders were burned as heretics when the order was dissolved in 1314."

Zowaar een item over dat pumpkin-festival waar wij twee jaar terug toevallig tegenaan reden in Half Moon Bayhayhayhaaaay (vrij naar de zanger) ... maar onze vrienden van de Staatsomroep weten helaas niet goed waar het ligt. Berlin - Französische Strasse
So ehm, Berlin. Unrecognisable as I thought since my last visits in 1989 and 1991. I quite liked the buzz of the city, could well imagine living there (they sell currywurst on every corner, this must be heaven). But is it a 'nice' city? To look at? Hmm.
We stayed at a hotel round the corner from Alexanderplatz. Alexanderplatz is a lot of buildingsites mixed with DDR-style buildings converted to shops (electronics and bistros mainly). It seems to have replaced Kreuzberg as the meetingpoint for drunk punks. Centre-square is the Galeria-Kaufhof, one of the many glitzy department stores. Very modern, but also very cold, as in general atmos. A trip up the Fernsehturm is well worth it though. If you like modern architecture, Berlin is your place. In Mitte and around Unter den Linden they are preserving the late 1800s style and feel, but the rest of the city is concrete and glass.
Potsdamer Platz looks better since I last saw it (it was wasteland), but I find it, sorry to say, ugly. Perhaps I should visit it on a sunny day or at night. They seem to want to forget the past in Berlin. It's like Liverpool and the Beatles; all the places that matter are 'removed'. The nazi-past I can understand, but the era of the DDR and The Wall? No original section of the Wall remains. Understandable, they were hacking away on it since day one of opening.
But why not keep Checkpoint Charlie and the old DDR watchtowers and buildings around it? As a reminder? Today, Checkpoint Charlie is a tourist trap. Pay the Lady one euro and have your picture taken. Nothing is original, not even the sign or the little cabin. So here's a photo of your webdominator in front of the original (no comment on the white sox, it was the 80's after all). So you can recover from the last picture; more on Berlin later .... and as to the title of this entry, go to Berlin and you will know.

Let's start with a cliché-photo. Because I'm glad I have some. The Berlin-ghost of 1991, my last visit to Berlin and all photos ruined due to the film being processed wrongly, nearly came back as my newly bought flash-card said: "bad data - card error" when I tried to download the pictures. Nothing worked. Not even a direct-linkup with the camera. Until Vista decided to offer me a pop-up to correct the errors. Clicked 'OK'; hello photos. Hail Vista!
