25 Oct '08 - 20:32 The Castle Aaaagh

Scotland - Monty Python's Castle Aaaagh (Castle Stalker)

This castle was the scene of one of England's worst defeats ...

King Arthur: The Castle Aaaagh. Our quest is at an end!  God be praised! Almighty God, we thank Thee that Thou hast vouchsafed to us the most holy--
[twong]
[baaaa]
King Arthur:
Jesus Christ!
[thud]

French Guard:
Allo, dappy English k-niggets and Monsieur Arthur King, who has the brain of a duck, you know. So, we French fellows outwit you a second time!

King Arthur: How dare you profane this place with your presence! I command you, in the name of the Knights of Camelot, to open the doors of this sacred castle, to which God Himself has guided us!

French Guard: How you English say, 'I one more time, mac, unclog my nose in your direction', sons of a window-dresser! So, you think you could out-clever us French folk with your silly knees-bent running about advancing behavior?! I wave my private parts at your aunties, you cheesy lot of second hand electric donkey-bottom biters.

King Arthur:
In the name of the Lord, we demand entrance to this sacred castle!

French Guard: No chance, English bed-wetting types. I burst my pimples at you and call your door-opening request a silly thing, you tiny-brained wipers of other people's bottoms!

King Arthur: If you do not open this door, we shall take this castle by force!
[splat]
King Arthur:  In the name of God and the glory of our--
[splat]

French Guard: [laughing]

King Arthur: Agh. Right! That settles it!

French Guard: Yes, depart a lot at this time and cut the approaching any more, or we fire arrows at the tops of your heads and make castanets out of your testicles already! Ha ha haaa ha!

King Arthur: Walk away. Just ignore them.

French Guard: And now, remain gone, illegitimate-faced bugger-folk! And, if you think you got a nasty taunting this time, you ain't heard nothing yet, dappy English k-nnniggets! Thpppt!

APPLECROSS - A BEGINNERS GUIDE  (18+, swearing and Scotland bashing involved)

10:24 The James Bond Connection

With the release of the new Bond-flick Quantum of Solace, I thought it would be nice to bore my visitors with some very trivial trivia which I recently encountered in Scotland relating to James Bond.

First connection, there's ofcourse the famous headquarters of M, normally known as Eilean Donan Castle. Now we've looked extensively for the secret 007 bunkers but concluded that we'd probably find Nessie first ... the castle was interesting nonetheless.

Scotland - Eilean Donan Castle

The second connection was a bit of a chance encounter. It involved a ship. A Royal Navy ship called HMS Westminster (F237). We encountered it off the Applecross peninsula. Normally nothing special, were it not that this ship was used for interior shots for the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies.

Scotland - off Applecross

However, we failed to spot Sir Sean (Connery) ...

21 Oct '08 - 09:17 In My Life

OK, granted, there are things that even I as a self-confessed Beatles anorack don't know. Whilst driving at the northernmost tip of mainland Britain, I came across this little sign:

Scotland - Durness

"John Lennon Memorial"? I knew he once had a car-accident in the Highlands (the town of Golspie it turned out). But what's all this about? I'm at the end of the world! Some investigation later and I know the answer. Appearantly a childhood holiday place of John Lennon and 'appearantly', the inspiration for the song 'In My Life'. I leave that to the historians, but it was a nice little memorial in any case and rather a fun find.

20 Oct '08 - 15:32 Picture Postcard

Yes, I have been on holiday to Sunny Scotland and no, I won't bore visitors to this website too much with pictures of it. Most will be published soon via my flickr-account. Below is a bit of mountaineering I've done (which for a Dutchman means, anything above 30 metres) - who says Scotland suffers from perma-drizzle? Blue skies galore! More soon on flickr.
