London Brighton 1998

The Run 1998 was a great succes. The weather was brilliant and the turnout even better. This was the first time that I did the Run and it sure won't be the last. Seeing 658 Mini's at the Record Attempt of 19 April 1998 in Harderwijk was something, this was a totally different experience. I just couldn't believe my eyes.
Finding Crystal Palace was relatively easy (okay, I turned the wrong way at the roundabout opposite the entrance believing I was going the completely wrong way..) but apart from that little excursion, everything went fine. When we arrived, there were a lot of mini's who arrived a bit earlier. We were in row 6. After receiving the t-shirt, ralley-shield and booklet, we could go on our way ... eh, after the 5 other rows left, which took about 2 hours ...

Leaving London however was a nightmare. Due to "a local event", as they called it on the radio, all the roads in South-London were completely jammed, hence it took a lot of sweat and 2 hours to leave the M25 circle. London was one traffic-jam, as Arsenal were celebrating their FA-cup win in North-London....
2 Hours of stop-and-go took it's toll though ... many Mini's were breathing for cool air at the side of the road. I never knew my temperature-gauge could reach that area ... but fortunately, I didn't had to stop. A 5 year old Cooper does have it's advantages.
Brighton; nightmare revisited. About one and a half hours it took. We left London at 12.00 and arrived at 15.45. By now, columns of Mini's at the road-side, with bonnet-up. But once I reached Madeira Drive, it was all forgotten. I walked for miles and the only thing I saw were Mini's ... wow. Many stands (unfortunately I couldn't find the stand of the self proclamed biggest mini club, the Mini Seven Club Netherlands ......) but the rest more than made up for that.
It was a great day. Thanks to the London & Surrey Mini Owners Club for organising this event in such a great way. I'll be back next year.
